On October 4th, we celebrate Saint Francis of Assisi , patron saint of Italy and a universal symbol of peace, brotherhood, and love for creation. Just months before the conclusion of the 2025 Jubilee, his figure resonates with particular power as a spiritual guide and a model of simple, essential living.
THE STORY OF SAINT FRANCIS
Born in Assisi in 1182, the son of a wealthy merchant, Francis abandoned privilege and wealth to follow the path of the Gospel. With his radical example, he founded the Order of Friars Minor, bringing a message of peace and universal brotherhood throughout Europe.
He died on October 3, 1226 and was canonized two years later by Pope Gregory IX, becoming one of the most beloved and venerated saints of all time.
CURIOSITIES ABOUT SAINT FRANCIS
The Canticle of the Creatures: among the first poetic texts in the Italian vernacular, a hymn to the beauty of creation.
Patron saint of Italy and environmentalists: since 1979, Saint Francis has also been the patron saint of those committed to protecting the environment.
The Greccio Nativity Scene: in 1223, it gave rise to the first representation of the Nativity, a tradition that still unites families and communities today.
The Porziuncola: a small church on the outskirts of Assisi, the beating heart of Franciscan spirituality and a destination for pilgrims from around the world.
SAINT FRANCIS AND THE JUBILEE 2025
The message of St. Francis is naturally intertwined with the theme of Jubilee 2025, "Pilgrims of Hope." Just as the Saint of Assisi invites us to walk with trust, simplicity, and fraternity, so the Jubilee calls millions of faithful and visitors to experience Rome as a place of reconciliation and spiritual rebirth.
In these final months, his example becomes even more relevant: an invitation not to lose the essential, to rediscover inner peace and to protect creation.
