Ferragosto: when summer meets the sky
From the repose of Augustus to the feast of the Assumption, a brief history of Ferragosto.
From the repose of Augustus to the feast of the Assumption, a brief history of Ferragosto.
There is a date that has marked the heart of the Italian summer for two thousand years: August 15th.
A day when sunshine, celebration, and spirituality walk together.
It all begins in Ancient Rome: the emperor Octavian Augustus, in 18 BC, gave his subjects a time of rest after the toil of the harvest: the Feriae Augusti.
Centuries later, the Church transformed this day into one of the most beloved feasts: the Assumption of Mary.
At the end of her earthly life, the Virgin was welcomed into Heaven: a shining sign of hope for all.
Whether you spend it on the beach, in the mountains, or in the city, August 15th remains a special day:
🌊 day trips
🍉 outdoor tables
🎆 Fireworks that light up the night
⛪ processions and solemn masses in honor of the Assumption
It's the day when all of Italy seems to stop to breathe in the joy of summer together.
This year, Ferragosto falls in the midst of the Jubilee 2025 – Pilgrims of Hope.
And so, more than ever, it's time to slow down, look up, and make room for hope.
Just like the pilgrims who come to Rome, we can experience Ferragosto not just as a break... but as a stage in our spiritual journey.
If you want to take home a token of this Jubilee Ferragosto, on the Jubilee Official Store website you'll find symbolic and faith-inspired objects. Little travel companions that will remind you every day that true summer is that of the soul.
Happy Ferragosto and have a good journey towards Jubilee 2025! 🌟
